SAS Six is a national initiative which aims to support specialist, associate specialist, and specialty doctors, known as SAS doctors. It was started by the SAS Collective. It is a group of SAS doctors dedicated to advocating for SAS doctors and improving their careers. The campaign calls for six key improvements to enhance the careers of SAS doctors in the NHS.

The SAS Six policy calls:

  1. Every early career SAS doctor should have access to an educational supervisor.
  2. All SAS doctors should have equity of access to professional development opportunities relevant to their stage of career.
  3. All specialty doctors who meet the required capabilities should have the opportunity to become specialists.
  4. Senior SAS doctors should be offered the opportunity to be educators at every level on a par with consultants e.g. educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, directors of medical education.
  5. All extended roles in leadership and management should be open to all substantive medical staff that is, consultants and appropriately experienced SAS doctors.
  6. All LEDs (locally-employed doctors) employed for more than two years within one NHS employer should be offered the opportunity to transfer to the appropriate SAS contract.

Dr Jenny Vaughan speaks at SAS day https://dauk.org/jennyvaughansasday/ https://dauk.org/jennyvaughansasday/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 21:10:00 +0000 https://dauk.org/jennyvaughansasday/ On the 18th of January our Law and Policy Officer and founder of Manslaughter and Healthcare Dr Jenny Vaughan spoke to doctors about how they can reduce their risk of criminal prosecution. Jenny will also be talking to doctors about the Learn not Blame campaign for a just culture in the NHS and how they can get involved. The BMA and the MDU also supported the event.

Dr Vaughan said ‘My main message is watch out for that first SUI and check any statement with your defence organisation. Watch out for any manipulation of the process and ensure you see a copy of the draft report before it’s finalised. Do not get stuck in staff canteens with seniors who ask you to admit your errors. Seniors must support trainees and they have a supreme duty to train and admit their own shortcomings as part of #LearnNotBlame.”
