{"id":1195,"date":"2023-12-19T19:19:26","date_gmt":"2023-12-19T19:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/ppe-waste-scandal-money-should-be-recovered-for-the-nhs\/"},"modified":"2023-12-19T19:19:26","modified_gmt":"2023-12-19T19:19:26","slug":"ppe-waste-scandal-money-should-be-recovered-for-the-nhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/ppe-waste-scandal-money-should-be-recovered-for-the-nhs\/","title":{"rendered":"PPE waste scandal: Money should be recovered for the NHS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dauk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nationalguardianppe.jpg\" alt=\"A frontline NHS worker putting on PPE during the pandemic\" class=\"wp-image-2864\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money lost to profiteering from the pandemic should be recovered for the NHS, the Doctors\u2019 Association UK (DAUK) told national radio listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Steve Taylor, DAUK spokesperson, said doctors were angry that people made excessive profit at a time of national emergency through the sale of PPE at inflated prices and that did not meet medical requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Taylor, a GP based in Manchester, was speaking to LBC News over the developing PPE scandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: \u201cI can\u2019t believe the mess we\u2019re in. We\u2019ve lost so much money as a result of all of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think back to 2020, when I was busy trying to rescue patients from Covid with very limited PPE at the time, the thought that anyone would actually make a profit out of it &#8211; it was a national emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cCompanies went out of the way to provide PPE and actually that PPE was inadequate, and that\u2019s a big issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs doctors, we\u2019re all a bit angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re angry at the amount of money that\u2019s currently needed in the NHS and has been lost. This was the NHS budget fundamentally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Taylor told LBC News listeners that following the ongoing Covid Inquiry changes should be made that prevent profiteering from national emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he said that the money \u201clost\u201d to profiteering should be recovered for the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFundamentally we haven\u2019t got enough money to run the NHS at the moment and that money is in the hands of some very wealthy people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey made a profit at a time of emergency when we were all fighting for the health of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt hasn\u2019t disappeared. Most of the money that very wealthy people have isn\u2019t suddenly spent &#8211; most of them struggle to spend it because they\u2019ve got too much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalplayer.com\/catchup\/lbcnews\/uk\/episodes\/BUsK4yNWWacfja91EhKWX3DmW\/\">Listen again to Dr Taylor talking to LBC News<\/a>.
