{"id":1218,"date":"2024-03-06T17:37:53","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T17:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/budget-fails-to-address-general-practice-funding-crisis\/"},"modified":"2024-03-06T17:37:53","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T17:37:53","slug":"budget-fails-to-address-general-practice-funding-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/budget-fails-to-address-general-practice-funding-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Budget fails to address general practice funding crisis&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dauk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Dr-Steve-Taylor-measles-vaccine-GMB-1-e1708182161344-1024x488.png\" alt=\"Head and shouldera photo of Dr Steve Taylor\" class=\"wp-image-9317\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr Steve Taylor, DAUK GP spokesperson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget has failed to address the crisis in general practice and provide the funding needed for safe and effective patient care, says the Doctors\u2019 Association UK (DAUK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Steve Taylor, DAUK GP spokesperson, said Chancellor Jeremy Hunt\u2019s latest budget does nothing to reverse the massive funding cuts to general practice in the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that despite more demand than ever, practices are closing, GPs are leaving and some are without work, describing it as a \u2018catastrophe for patients\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citing remarks made in 2021 by Mr Hunt, a former Health Secretary, Dr Taylor said the budget \u2018won\u2019t turn the tide\u2019 for GPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Taylor said: \u201cAs representatives of GPs working in the NHS, the budget has failed to provide what is needed for safe and effective patient care in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJeremy Hunt said in 2021 of a funding announcement for general practice that \u2018as someone who tried and failed to get 5,000 more GPs into the system, I don\u2019t think this package will turn the tide\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell this package won\u2019t turn the tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe failure to mention GPs, many of whom are now struggling to get work due to overall funding cuts of 20% per patient per year since 2016, is hugely disappointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGP employment is a big issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople need access to GPs but the Government has only agreed to give 2% more funding, or \u00a33 per patient per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGeneral practice has been the most productive area of the NHS, with GPs doing 20% more work than in 2019 with fewer GPs.
