{"id":1235,"date":"2024-04-05T15:40:16","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T14:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/packham-proud-to-support-medical-students-essay-writing-competition\/"},"modified":"2024-04-05T15:40:16","modified_gmt":"2024-04-05T14:40:16","slug":"packham-proud-to-support-medical-students-essay-writing-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/packham-proud-to-support-medical-students-essay-writing-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Chris Packham proud to support medical students&#8217; essay writing competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human health depends on biodiversity, says Chris Packham, who will judge DAUK\u2019s essay writing competition for medical students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Doctors\u2019 Association UK (DAUK) is encouraging medical students to submit an essay with a maximum of 1000 words on the question: Why does biodiversity matter to healthcare and what should we do about it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortlisted finalists will be judged by Mr&nbsp;Packham, the broadcaster, environmental activist and animal welfare campaigner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first prize is \u00a3300, with two \u00a3100 prizes for the two runners-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top three essays will also be considered for publication in the BMJ Leader blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Packham, whose recent TV credits include Earth for the BBC, and Is it Time to Break the Law for Channel 4, said he was proud to be able to support medical students<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: \u201cToo often we think of wildlife, biodiversity, as something &#8216;pretty to look at&#8217;, but humans are a part of that biodiversity and our health depends on it \u2013 from the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat, the medicines we need, to our mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat&#8217;s why I&#8217;m proud to support these medical students at the start of their careers exploring the vital link between biodiversity and human health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dauk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Chris-Packham-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Head and shoulders photo of broadcaster, environmental activist and animal welfare campaigner Chris Packham\" class=\"wp-image-9512\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Broadcaster, environmental activist and animal welfare campaigner Chris Packham is to judge the shortlisted finalists in our essay writing competition (Credit Jo Charlesworth)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All medical students in the UK are eligible to enter. The competition is free to enter and you must be a DAUK member to enter.
