{"id":1388,"date":"2025-06-06T22:42:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T21:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/general-practice-remains-an-afterthought\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T22:42:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T21:42:00","slug":"general-practice-remains-an-afterthought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/general-practice-remains-an-afterthought\/","title":{"rendered":"General practice an afterthought in new urgent care plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAUK\u2019s GP committee says general practice \u2018remains an afterthought\u2019 after Government plans were unveiled to reform urgent and emergency care.\r\n\r\nThe Government said it was investing nearly \u00a3450m to expand urgent and emergency care facilities.\r\n\r\nThe Department of Health said it will see 800,000 fewer patients each year waiting more than four hours in A&amp;E.\r\n\r\nMore will receive urgent care in their communities, it said.\r\n\r\nIt is part of Government plans to move more health services from hospital to community settings.\r\n\r\nDr Steve Taylor, GP spokesperson for the Doctors\u2019 Association UK, welcomed the introduction of more urgent care provision.\r\n\r\nBut he said that general practice was being overlooked in the drive to move more care into communities.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulsetoday.co.uk\/news\/urgent-care\/long-awaited-urgent-care-plan-completely-overlooks-general-practice-gps-warn\/\">Speaking to Pulse<\/a>, Dr Taylor said: &#8220;An urgent treatment centre appointment costs \u00a385 on average to provide.\r\n\r\n\u201cCommunity care in the form of general practice remains an afterthought, yet provides similar appointments, if funded, at a third to half the cost to the NHS.\r\n\r\n\u201cActual numbers attending A&amp;E have increased 200,000 per month over the past five years whilst GP services have increased 5 million.\r\n\r\n\u201cThere is more need for a better joined up approach to patient care between hospitals and the community, and this will see a better use of resources.\u201d\r\n\r\nFrontline doctors run DAUK for frontline doctors.
