DAUK\u2019s vice chair Dr Ellen Welch contributed to a national newspaper report on the demand for weight-loss treatment on the NHS.\r\n\r\nThe i Paper reported that GPs were \u2018swamped\u2019 with requests for Mounjaro, also as tirzepatide, in the first week since the NHS rollout.\r\n\r\nIt said hundreds of thousands of people taking Mounjaro privately, incorrectly assumed they could switch to an NHS prescription.\r\n\r\nMounjaro is an anti-diabetic drug that lowers blood sugar levels and slows down how quickly food is digested\r\n\r\nDr Welch, a GP in Cumbria, said ICBs should have been clear with patients about the eligibility criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said there was a limit on the number of patients in each area eligible for the NHS weight-loss treatment.\r\n\r\nAnd she warned the strain on the system created by demand could mean delays for those who are eligible.\r\n\r\nShe said: \u201cOn Monday alone, we received around 50 enquires about tirzepatide \u2013 the majority from people already prescribed it privately, wishing to switch to an NHS supply.\r\n\r\n\u201cAlmost all were from patients who didn\u2019t meet the criteria for the initial roll out.\u201d\r\n\r\nRead the i Paper article in full<\/a>.\r\n\r\nDAUK committee members are all volunteers and speak to the media about issues facing frontline doctors in their own time.
