{"id":1457,"date":"2025-11-25T11:30:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T11:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/our-call-for-new-patient-centred-gp-contract\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T11:30:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T11:30:26","slug":"our-call-for-new-patient-centred-gp-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/our-call-for-new-patient-centred-gp-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Our call for new patient-centred GP contract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors Association UK (DAUK) has launched a campaign calling for a new GP contract that puts patients at the centre of care.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTitled <em>Your GP, here for you<\/em>, the campaign highlights the mounting pressures on GP practices following a decade of underinvestment.\r\n\r\nDr Steve Taylor, DAUK\u2019s GP co-lead, said: \u201cAfter years of underfunding GP practices, appointments are still as hard to get and patients are not getting the services they need or deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Patient-centred GP contract<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have produced our own modern patient-centred GP contract. The contract is designed to strengthen continuity, improve access, and ensure GP services are properly funded.\r\n\r\nOur proposals are based on <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm5803\/cmselect\/cmhealth\/113\/summary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm5803\/cmselect\/cmhealth\/113\/summary.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1764155596552000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1C71fbAUPpEe0xyLx06H73\">The future of general practice<\/a>, the 2022 Health and Social Care Committee report produced with cross-party support.\r\n\r\nHowever, the report\u2019s publication coincided with the resignation of then-Prime Minister Liz Truss, leading to limited public attention and little subsequent policy action.\r\n\r\nOur key recommendations <span lang=\"EN-US\">are around continuity of care and removal of the tick-box<\/span> t<span lang=\"EN-US\">op-down management of care. They emphasise a patient-centred approach and plans for improvement on access and fixing problems of inequality.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GP funding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivering this vision will require investment. We\u2019re asking the Government to increase core GP funding by \u00a340 per patient per year \u2013 less than \u00a31 a week \u2013 to restore funding to the real-terms level of 2016.\r\n\r\nAverage funding has risen from \u00a3152 per patient in 2016 to \u00a3169 today. Had it kept pace with inflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.nhs.uk\/data-and-information\/publications\/statistical\/nhs-payments-to-general-practice\/england-2023-24\/executive-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it would now stand at \u00a3209 per patient<\/a>.\r\n\r\nDr Taylor said: \u201cGeneral practice has been stretched to breaking point by real-term cuts in funding by successive governments.\r\n\r\n\u201cWith the right contract and fair funding, GPs can deliver continuity, improve access, and rebuild general practice, which is the bedrock of our NHS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your GP, here for you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Taylor added: \u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">We hope patients, GPs, community teams, and MPs will see the incredible benefits of a fully funded and functioning general practice.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\u201cThe time is now.
