{"id":2491,"date":"2026-03-23T16:16:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/?p=2491"},"modified":"2026-03-23T16:16:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:16:13","slug":"meningitis-outbreak-covid-lessons-not-being-learnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/meningitis-outbreak-covid-lessons-not-being-learnt\/","title":{"rendered":"Meningitis outbreak: Covid lessons not being learnt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Doctors\u2019 Association UK (DAUK) has raised serious concerns that lessons from the Covid Inquiry are not being applied to the current meningitis outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAUK has warned that the Government is repeating past mistakes around public health messaging, preparedness, and transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAUK committee members have expressed unease at shifting public health guidance and what they describe as the \u2018downplaying\u2019 of transmission risks by the Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public health information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, DAUK committee members highlighted recent changes to official public health information, including the removal of references to aerosol transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Steve Taylor, DAUK GP co-lead, said: \u201cIt is deeply concerning to see language around transmission being softened or altered in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe went through the pandemic where delayed recognition of airborne spread had devastating consequences. To see the same thing happening again is alarming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Alison George, DAUK committee member and a GP in Newcastle, said that university students frequently travel between campuses, social settings, and family homes, which risked the spreading of the disease outside of Kent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bigger picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Limiting focus to isolated clusters risks underestimating the broader spread, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr George said: \u201cStudents mix, travel, and interact across universities all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo frame this as a localised issue without wider preventative action risks missing the bigger picture entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr George warned the situation bears uncomfortable similarities to early pandemic decision-making, where concerns about economic and social disruption appeared to influence public health messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Covid Inquiry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said: \u201cThe Covid Inquiry has already revealed that key decisions were shaped by economic considerations rather than purely public health needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are worried that the same tensions are playing out again, and that the desire to avoid disruption is taking precedent over public health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr George raised concerns about preparedness, including vaccine availability and public health information, drawing parallels with early shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) during Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Precautionary approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAUK is urging health authorities to adopt a precautionary approach, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clear and consistent communication about transmission risks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consideration of wider spread beyond initial clusters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapid assessment of vaccination strategies for at-risk populations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transparency in how public health decisions are made<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are a non-profit campaigning and lobbying organisation led by frontline doctors, for frontline doctors.
