{"id":430,"date":"2020-09-09T12:34:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T11:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/mentalhealthcrisiscovid\/"},"modified":"2020-09-09T12:34:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-09T11:34:00","slug":"mentalhealthcrisiscovid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/mentalhealthcrisiscovid\/","title":{"rendered":"DAUK in The Mirror: NHS and social care staff face mental health crisis in wake of Covid-19&#8217;s first wave"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NHS and social care staff are facing a mental health crisis as doctors, nurses and care workers face the burnout and trauma of battling Covid-19, MPs have been warned.Staff on the frontlines are struggling to come to terms with what they witnessed during the pandemic, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/coronavirus-1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>coronavirus<\/strong><\/span><\/a> were told, as frontline staff shared their fears about levels of preparation for a second wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These fears were echoed by Intensive Care Registrar Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden from the Doctor&#8217;s Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She warned that ministers&#8217; language and conduct had put extra pressure on doctors and that frontline staff needed &#8220;reassurance that the same thing that happened in February and March&#8221; with chaotic announcements and a lack of willingness to listen to medics &#8220;isn&#8217;t going to be repeated in the winter&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added: &#8220;It all comes back to valuing staff and the huge sacrifice people will make to keep people safe over the winter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the pandemic, she said that staff had witnessed difficult events but had done it together &#8211; but now they had time to decompress they would have to face without adequate support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think we will see staff take their own lives,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the full article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/nhs-social-care-staff-face-22655184\">The Mirror.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden DAUK President warns the All Party Parliamentary Group on Coronavirus that we are heading into a mental health crisis in the NHS.
