{"id":638,"date":"2021-01-01T10:45:04","date_gmt":"2021-01-01T10:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/dauk-on-medscape-covid-19-causes-rising-burnout-intensity-in-uk-doctors\/"},"modified":"2021-01-01T10:45:04","modified_gmt":"2021-01-01T10:45:04","slug":"dauk-on-medscape-covid-19-causes-rising-burnout-intensity-in-uk-doctors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dauk.org\/dauk-on-medscape-covid-19-causes-rising-burnout-intensity-in-uk-doctors\/","title":{"rendered":"DAUK on Medscape: COVID-19 Causes Rising Burnout Intensity in UK Doctors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dauk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/doctormentalhealth.jpg\" alt=\"PPE head in hands doctor\" class=\"wp-image-3083\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medscape UK&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/slideshow\/uk-doctors-burnout-2020-6013312\">latest online survey<\/a>\u00a0of more than 1000 doctors highlights how working through COVID-19 has impacted their mental health and personal lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of doctors reporting burnout increased to 37% this year from 22% when we last asked in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;This latest survey absolutely aligns with what the Doctors&#8217; Association UK is hearing from members,&#8221; commented Dr Natalie Ashburner, wellbeing lead for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dauk.org\/\">Doctors&#8217; Association UK<\/a>\u00a0(DAUK).<\/p><p>&#8220;NHS staff were already suffering from high rates of burnout and mental illness in the context of a decade of chronic underfunding of services, lack of staff, and erosion of pay and working conditions.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Danger Pay&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of doctors thought overtime or danger pay would be appropriate. Instead, most doctors in England got a 2.8%&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/934305\">pay rise<\/a>&nbsp;said to be in recognition of frontline work, but described as &#8220;a metaphorical slap in the face&#8221; by the British Medical Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as burnout, nearly 1 in 5 doctors said they were clinically depressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;COVID-19 has drastically exacerbated these pre-existing issues and the result is that dedicated, highly skilled staff have been pushed to the point at which they are unable to cope any longer,&#8221; Dr Ashburner said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">View the entire article here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/940129\">https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/940129<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Medscape UK&#8217;s\u00a0latest online survey\u00a0of more than 1000 doctors highlights how working through COVID-19 has impacted their mental health and personal lives.
