A Doctors\u2019 Association UK (DAUK) letter of complaint to the media regulator about \u2018misleading\u2019 anti-GP columns in the Telegraph <\/em>has garnered more than 2,500 signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DAUK wrote to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) on Friday to report Telegraph <\/em>columnist Allison Pearson for breaching the Editors\u2019 Code of Practice with \u2018inaccurate\u2019 articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter<\/a>, penned \u2018in response to an outbreak of misleading articles\u2019 on the current GP crisis in the newspaper, called for a formal apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DAUK today announced that \u2018over 2,500 signatures of support were added over the weekend, demonstrating the sense of injustice being felt in primary care\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter said the DAUK has \u2018concerns\u2019 about Ms Pearson\u2019s \u2018inaccurate suggestion that GPs are \u201chiding\u201d despite NHS data confirming they are providing more consultations than ever before\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also raised her \u2018incitement of attacks and abuse against GPs and primary care workers by using inflammatory language\u2019 and her \u2018potentially libellous statement that care from general practice is \u201ccruel, negligent and, frankly, inhuman treatment\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added that \u2018responsible media reporting is a patient safety issue\u2019, as assumptions that practices are closed could lead to patients not seeking help for serious symptoms or inappropriately using emergency departments and 111.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAUK chair Dr Jenny Vaughan\u2019s letter said: \u2018Factual inaccuracies and negative portrayal of GPs in the press erode the trust that is vital in the doctor-patient relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018There is already an increase in physical, verbal and online abuse towards NHS staff and we are extremely concerned about the potential impact such journalism might have on the safety of NHS staff. We call for a formal response and apology from Ms Pearson.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DAUK is \u2018extremely disappointed by the lack of central and governmental support\u2019, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter also said that the DAUK is \u2018aware that this is not the first time Ms Pearson has been reported\u2019 to IPSO and has previously invited her to \u2018experience a typical day in general practice with no response\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several prominent GPs have signed the letter, including RCGP president Professor Dame Clare Gerada, NHS England medical director for Covid vaccination Dr Jonathan Leach, GP Survival Chair\u00a0Dr John Hughes<\/a>\u00a0and media GP\u00a0Dr Punam Krishan.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
